Almost everybody knows Nintendo for making video games but this was not always so. And if you know Nintendo then there's a very large chance you know who this is.
Back in 1951 they were called Nintendo playing cards and as their name implied they made handmade playing cards, these were intended for american export only however they became hugely popular in Japan.
In 1980 Nintendo began there production of the GAME & WATCH in Japan. The GAME & WATCH system were the first portable LCD video games. Also Donkey Kong is made. The hero was originally Called Jumpman and he had to save his girlfriend, Pauline, from a crazed ape called Donkey Kong.
1989 The Game Boy is released the first portable gaming system with changeable cartridges, they however did not use colour yet, the only colour you could see was a dim green.
1996 Nintendo release Pokemon for the game boy colour which over the years becomes a multibillion dollar franchise. Pokemon centered around catching, trading and battling Pokemon this was very much like a trading card came only with movement. There were 151 Pokemon to collect how ever you would have to trade with other people to catch them all, this idea of linking games was very new. Depending on what version you bought, red or blue, that would be the only colour displayed to that game.
Also in this year Nintendo releases the Nintendo 64, it was called this because it was a 64 bit system(Keep in mind that nowadays you can run 1920 by 1080 bits). While the Nintendo's gaming competition moved to use discs Nintendo still used cartridges.
The Nintendo 64 was also Nintendo's first 3D Console. not 3D as it came out of the screen but that the player could move left, right, forward, backwards and up and down.
2001 The Nintendo Game cube is released however is greatly over shadowed by the roaring success of the PlayStation 2 released a year earlier. The GameCube was shadowed as well because it used mini-discs meaning it couldn't play DVDs like other current consoles.
In 2006 The Nintendo is released and is still one of the most popular portable devices today. This is because of its apeal to people of all ages because of Mario Bros for the young children to Games sutied to older people like Dr Kawashimas brain training.
The DS and The Wii has brought a whole new media of people to gaming through games like wii fit and Brain Training for the DS.
These types of Games are known as Casual games and are aimed at people who normaly wouldn't do any gaming.
